SmackDown Has It Fallout and Then...

A Good Friday to You, Enthusiasts!

I hope it’s going well. So, there are a couple of things of definite note going on in the wrestling world. Let’s not waste any time and have this little chat.

So, let’s start with the news outside of WWE. It appears Tony Khan, owner of AEW, has a “big announcement” that he’s gonna drop on Wednesday (3/2). One of the rumors is that he acquired Ring of Honor. I can’t even contemplate what that could implicate. Not that it’s bad or anything. ROH wrestlers definitely do it for the love of the game so, that would make AEW even more of an alternative to WWE. Not sure if that improves the quality but the roster is sure to have heart. The implications are interesting to ponder. We’ll see what happens.

As for WWE news, the main headline is that Cesaro left the company. Word is he just let his contract expire. This is unfortunate but most of us would say somewhat inevitable. Cesaro, quite frankly, lacked charisma. He’s a great worker. No one had a problem with him in the ring, but no one really cared either. Like I keep saying, WWE plays like high school. He simply wasn’t a “cool kid”. He’s more like some sort of Woodworking wiz or something. His talents are generally appreciated but no one is in the market for the birdhouses he builds. It’s too bad. WWE can be a very immature place and people like Cesaro simply don’t get the appreciation they deserve. It’s about the “glitz and glamor” over here.

So that brings us to tonight’s SmackDown Fallout show. It looks like the plan is to unite the titles at WrestleMania so I guess that means the end of the brand split is soon to follow. I don’t really have any feelings on the matter because WWE has to better flesh out its overall approach. With types like Cesaro just slipping out the back door, there’s a lot falling through the cracks.

It’s pretty clear that WWE is somewhat reluctant to fully change things but trial and error is definitely in effect. All I can say is that they have to get back to basics. Basic storytelling. Basic action. Keep it simple and rebuild on what comes out. It’s just what you do when you’re at a loss. And they’ve been searching for something for at least 15 years. It’s all I can suggest because there is some stubbornness on their end. The only thing that may change that is missing the mark. They want to stay in the black but get it wrong too often and that won’t happen. Right now, this is the most entertaining thing about them, watching them stumble around looking for “it”. It could go on for quite some time.

In the meantime, we’ll watch Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns have the standard contract signing. We’ll see if it deteriorates into madness. And Sami Zayn will celebrate winning the Intercontinental Championship. You’ll have to tune in for everything else. Funny tweets and Likes get retweeted. It’s a long, long-haul people. Don’t expect too much and try to be constructive with the criticism. This time from now to WrestleMania should be the epitome of “hit or miss”. Try to have fun with it.

See You in a Bit,
