Summer Slam 2022... It Is Here...

Happy Summer Slam, Enthusiasts!

Well, this is an interesting time in the WWE Universe. We have “Summer Slam I” essentially because we are under the Triple H regime. Does that mean all the others no longer matter? No. It means they are now outdated because they were directly overseen by Mr. Vince McMahon. Is this a good thing? Most people think it is. We shall see.

This is not to say anything against Triple H but Money in the Bank was actually solid. It was the first solid, from start to finish, PPV I’ve ever seen in my 7-8 years of watching. Will H keep pace? It’s hard to say. The card would say not to get hopes up but no matter who’s in charge, the talent is there. Will it be put to the best use?

I’m curious to see what happens and of course, I will be watching but here are the matches I’ll be most interested in seeing. First off, is the Logan Paul vs. The Miz match. This is intriguing due to all the press saying that Paul is angling to be a Face. If Triple H has any real say, he should be cerebral assassinating Paul into understanding that he should start as a Heel first and then transition into Facedom. If he can pull off being a solid Heel, people could come around to like him. I think Baron Corbin is pulling that off right now and Paul needs to take notes. I’ll be watching just to see how they manage it.

Speaking of Corbin, the second match of interest is him vs. Pat McAfee. This should be a fun match. McAfee just gets it and so does Corbin. The only thing about Corbin is that he’s a little too easy to believe. As I’ve said before, he can come off like a real prick if he’s not careful and Heeldom is a delicate thing. You can’t be an asshole. You can be a dick, but not an asshole. Now a prick, to me, is a little saltier than a dick. There’s a little flirtation in dick moves. It’s more a show or display than it is a dig. Pricks, to me, dig. It’s to actually piss you off and to work your nerve. And he digs and that makes it hard to like him and remember, the real task is that Heel or Face, people like you. People do like Corbin but you have to wonder if it’s for the right reasons. It all depends on how he Heels it out. I root for him. He’s fun when he gets it. If these 2 have a good time with it, this could very well be match of the night.

So, for me that leaves the main event and though I think the first 2 are more compelling this one does have a lot of weight on it. It’s supposed to be the “last showdown” between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Now, many haven’t been too taken with most of their previous matches. The last one had plenty to be desired but I don’t know if that was their fault. Looked like Management was trying to do something that didn’t work. So, right there, I think they owe it to themselves to do their very best to tear the place down. The beauty of this sort of match is that no one is expecting anything pretty. It should be a big ole mess of a match that should live up to its “epic” hype. What becomes interesting is who wins.

Most would feel that it’s Reigns because of all the long term plans but Triple H is in the driver’s seat now and people appear to be leaning towards Lesnar. Will H give the people what they want? Lesnar then loses to McIntyre in the UK and then Reigns comes storming back in for his titles back stateside against McIntyre?

It could be interesting, now H is in charge. I don’t really care who wins as long as it’s a rip-roaring match. I think that’s all they should focus on for now because in that case, both can potentially win. A Reigns loss could properly “fire up” him up and he may change his game so that it’s more focused on actually maintaining the prize as opposed to just being “given it”. It could prompt the character development that’s sorely needed. Lesnar can easily take the L for McIntyre and still lurk in the background no harm, no foul. It’s not a bad route for now. And if Reigns holds his end of the bargain and performs well, which he can, the loss could get a great pop from the crowd that allows WWE to win. Then it’s back to the complaints of the title on a “part-time player”. So…we’ll see what they do. A Reigns win is on them to keep interesting. Not saying it can’t be done but it’s their task to prove.

As for the other matches, it’s on them to rise to the occasion. And mind you, we all know that they can but will they? Boredom is everyone else’s biggest enemies right now. Most of the card is recent repeat matches. The age old question of, “Didn’t we just see this?...” will be popping up. What’s different this time? That’s on our players to demonstrate. Also, we can’t forget there are probably some surprises planned. Many have noticed that Seth Rollins should be in town. There has been talk that Bray Wyatt may have been coaxed back given the changes. Could Rollins arrive with Wyatt in tow?

Personally, I think we may see MJF. I wouldn’t be surprised that a deal was cut with AEW and all that hullabaloo of him leaving was just set up for this, a Summer Slam debut. It is a WWE tradition to drop big returns or acquisitions now. We could potentially see Bayley return as well. That could be a great moment. Yet as with every Summer Slam, we shall see what they do. And just like I always do, Funny Tweets and Likes get retweeted. Be honest out there. We may actually be heard.

See You in a Bit,
