RAW Sets the Pace for the Royal Rumble...
Happy Holidays, Enthusiasts!
Behold the final post of 2020! It was a
stunning year for all the wrong reasons but some home truths came to light so
it’s not all bad. Let’s get to what’s circulating in the wrestling world, shall
we?
So, you don’t need me to inform you of
Brodie Lee’s/Luke Harper’s passing. This is just too bad. I didn’t know much
about him but it’s put a smile on my face that I kinda pegged him right. A few
posts back I said something along the lines that I bet both Luke Harper and
Erick Rowan probably smelled like baby powder despite their disheveled
appearances. I read that he did in fact keep good care of his “gear” and did
not offend. The news coming out is that he was sick since October. That’s what
floored me. I had no idea anything was wrong. Those are the toughest hits. Note
how the concept of Impermanence affects Life. Nothing is forever and we have no
idea how much time we’ve got. It’s sad to see good people pass. If it makes you
feel better, think of him as being too good for this world or having had conquered
the lessons of this life. Let us pray that his next one is proportionately
fulfilling.
The other bit of interesting news is Jim
Ross’ 2¢ on why WWE’s ratings are slipping. He cites “50-50 Booking” and no one
is “hot” right now. No one is must see television. I can see his points but how
to achieve that in this day and age is what is stumping people not just WWE. The
general palette has changed from the days of wrestling glory. They’re still
trying to figure out how to evolve. It’s hard to explain why a person would
want to watch a rigged fight. They have to start angling towards coming off
like live action movies. Not necessarily have out-of-place car chases and
explosions but perhaps start mimicking martial art movies. This is what I’m
getting at with developing the WWE Universe. It’s safe to assume that an
audience who likes wrestling generally likes action. So many of the viewers
have probably seen movies like BloodSport
and at least one of the Karate Kids
and the like so, if you give an audience action and coherent storylines, you
could feasibly hold their interest. WWE has to do this because matches are
arbitrary at the moment. So, what’s the point of watching a rigged match that
serves no purpose? If they at least stuck to a tournament structure, you could find
some interest in who advances but I know that the traditional model doesn’t
suit a world as chaotic as the WWE Universe at least not yet. They have to find
their own way. Hopefully, that’s what they’re doing. That’s why I keep saying
this may take a while. Not sure what I’m suggesting has been done before so
they’re going to have to trial and error it for a while but it is possible.
So, that brings us to tonight’s RAW. We see firsthand if they can mold all
this into something. The Royal Rumble is what we’re setting up for and so that
means others will make their bids into the 30-man and 30-woman melee. Alexa
Bliss has assumed the sick and twisted duties and continues to toy with Randy Orton
in her playground and we’ll see whatever else they got going. Let’s see if they
manage to entertain or show that we’re too old. Funny tweets get retweeted and
as for Likes well, it’s hard to say what we’ll get and people are still reeling
from Lee’s passing so just stay on the lookout for some inspiration.
See You in a Bit,
-Nicole
