WWE Presents to Us Day 1...
Happy New Year, Enthusiasts!
So, here we are at Day 1 to see if this is the first day of
something. I know I’m saying it’s the revolution but I should add that it’s a
realistic revolution. This is born out of necessity not outrage. With talent
like Toni Storm walking out, you can’t exactly say it’s your best days. WWE may
anyway just to prove a greater point but they run the risk of people not caring
enough to get their real meaning.
So, Day 1 has some pressure on it. The question has become,
why should people keep bothering? Just out of sheer habit? The numbers will
only continue to dwindle. We all know they don’t want that. Can’t maintain a profit
with interest waning. How to turn the tide? They don’t know. And to be honest,
those who think they do, would find that it’s no easy task.
The WWE Universe is not exactly or exclusively comprised of pro-wrestling
fans so, sticking to that original construct isn’t guaranteed to gain the
interest of the common person. That is the target audience, the common person,
anyone who as access to visual media is who they’re going for. How do they get
the lush, suburban housewife to take a look from time to time? The older
gentlemen who rather watch fishing? How do they appeal to kids who never seen
it before? All questions that have to be addressed. I’ll be honest by saying I
don’t have any direct answers. All I can suggest is to aim for humor and make
the house shows fun. That broad scope is what’s going make this take a long
time. The path of least resistance isn’t going to easily reveal itself. I’m
rooting for them. There is a ton of potential because of that open canvas.
Let’s hope they get out of their own way and allow themselves to tap in.
So, the matches I’m interested in, they’re probably kinda
obvious but to be honest, this is an underdog’s PPV. The first match that
brings this to mind is the match between The Miz and Edge. This would have been
so much easier to pull off 15 years ago. Because the catch is the douchey Miz
against the cool Edge. Now, that thinking is considered immature. Is that
really worth having a physical contest over? It was immature then but that was
what you saw on the playground, so to speak. Now, Edge has to have a better
point. Edge “crapping” on The Miz’s & Maryse’s wedding vows renewal is
technically shitty. So, he’s the Heel in this bout no matter how you feel about
The Miz. If you feel The Miz deserves it, that actually says a lot about you.
In that case, this is The Miz’s stage to shine on. He’s got to put on a great
match despite everything. The Miz has had big matches but he’s not known as
being a great wrestler. He’ll have to be gutsy out there to win us over anyway.
We’ll see what happens.
The next match of interest is the only scheduled women’s
match with Becky Lynch facing off against Liv Morgan. This is interesting
because on paper, WWE is giving the fans what they want, Morgan. Yet, she may
not be ready for the spotlight. If WWE
is smart, they try to make this a win-win as opposed to the lose-lose it’s
looking like it’s gonna be. Morgan has to somehow honestly, get her shot. If
she fails, it must happen only in the form of a bad performance and nothing
else. If she nails it, she nails it. If she doesn’t, it has to be in a way WWE
can’t be blamed for. Otherwise, it will be another gripe against WWE for
setting her up to fail. This could go either way. How it plays out will say a
lot about how WWE plans to proceed.
And then we have the probable main event with Brock Lesnar
taking his rightful place beside Paul Heyman just despite The Head of All
Tables, The Leader of All Valid Bloodlines, First of His Name, Roman Reigns. This
is an old tale so, the task these gentlemen have is to make the story fresh and
new again. This has to mark a new chapter in what should be a complex and
storied rivalry. They are capable of achieving this but does WWE know how to do
that? Do they even know what that means? This will be a very telling match. It
will dictate whether WWE actually has a clue or not. If they prove not to, don’t
be surprised if we see a lot of outsourcing in 2022. It will be a rush to find anything
that steadily works.
So that’s my take, Enthusiasts. It will be Day 1 indeed in a plethora of ways. Let’s hope WWE has a valid endgame because if they don’t the real consequence they will face is embarrassment. They will prove they’ve lost the proverbial script and may no longer be a valid source of “sports entertainment”. All we can really count on is that they’d rather have the last laugh. I don’t know if they quite get how to do that but I wouldn’t be surprised if they break even. Kinda like Matrix: Resurrections. It’ll have some spots that could be done without but in the end it satisfies for the most part. I saw it on HBO Max so, don’t want my money back if you get my drift 😉 That’s what I’m expecting.
Everyone else has to earn their keep more or less. For them,
they should aim for showing why they got the job. That should suffice when all
else fails. This will be an involved process. If WWE is actually trying to do better,
we should see what they’re getting at by the end of the year. Then we can
assess if there’s hope. Until then, funny tweets and Likes get retweeted. Try
to be open. Give them a chance. Remember, they have to make us like it. Can’t
get the profits if they don’t.
See You in a Bit,
-Nicole Alexis
