COVID or Not, RAW Carries On...

A Merry Monday to You, Enthusiasts.

For those who celebrate it, I hope your Christmas was splendid. I have to say, I enjoyed mine. Kinda miss my Entertainment Industry days when I more or less had the last 2 weeks of the year off but alas, those days are no more, just another casualty of the pandemic. Not complaining, just noting the difference. As for news in the wrestling world, there are some stirrings. Let’s chat about them, shall we.

So, this Hook kid is following in his father’s footsteps over at AEW. Some are taking note of how he no-sold a pile driver recently, never mind how he slapped Cody Rhodes after getting out of school this week too. He’s definitely making waves but he reads like a punk 15-year-old. Why doesn’t Wardlow cram him into a locker? Maybe I’m a bit too WWE but this kid isn’t winning me over. I know I’m not the demographic but I officially don’t get the hype. Is he cruising for a bruising or are we supposed to take him seriously? Personally, he looks too small and young to be coming in with that sort of swagger. I’m all for a true upstart, someone blazing trails but this kid seems like he’s looking to piss people off. He may be no-selling but I’m not buying. What happens when someone stuffs him? That’s what I now want to see. Is it a blow to the ego or does he rise to the challenge? I’ll make more of an assessment then.

For WWE, the Covid has them all fucked up. Bianca Belair, Big E, Becky Lynch, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins have been pulled from house shows as the Omicron variant makes its presence felt. The feeling is that RAW is now up in the air because of this as well. There’s not much that can be done about this. It is a souped up cold after all. These winter conditions tend to aid its spread. All we can do is remain vigilant. Precautions are being made to make sure there are main roster members available to perform at Day 1.

I still feel that maybe half of this is a work but it’s so danged believable it’s hard for me to say with authority. Yet, if some of this is a work, I hope they think long and hard about it. Genius could lie here but how to best coax it out, I can’t see.

There’s an article circulating stating that Tony Khan talked a little shit on WWE saying that AEW doesn’t use comedy writers to draft up sketches. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind that if the sketches were funny. If WWE is using comedy writers/comedians it looks like they got some who worked for Saturday Night Live (SNL)  in the 90s. Most of their stuff doesn’t land or makes you laugh for all the wrong reasons. I don’t mind being entertained but WWE has to always remember what it’s working with. These wrestlers generally have charisma, they aren’t often actors. Some can make it work and they’re special but many can’t. Let’s take Jeff Hardy for example. Always liked the guy but he’s never been all that great on the mic. Thankfully, he’s so fun to watch, he doesn’t need to be. Wrestlers can’t hope for this. They should angle to be the full package. Otherwise, stick to lesser known promotions. WWE fans are there for all sorts of reasons “sports entertainment” is but one of them. The roster’s focus should be making sure the fans have a great time. If doing a sketch from time to time does that, what’s the problem?

That all being said, RAW carries on in the face of the COVID threat. Otis is to face Randy Orton. Dolph Ziggler will try to take the US Title off of Damian Priest. AJ Styles gives Omos his solo shot at the big leagues and Austin Theory will see if he can piss Finn Bálor off enough to trigger him into the next level. Amidst all this, The Miz and Maryse will renew their wedding vows. Ain’t that some pro-wrestling 😉 Funny tweets and Likes get retweeted. Try to withhold judgment. If the COVID outbreak is real, then they’re literally pulling it out of their ass for our entertainment, only talk shit if you could put an equal show on the fly. If this is a work, then it’s on them to sell it without us catching wise. That could draw some criticism. Let’s sit back, relax and see what happens.

See You in a Bit,

-Nicole Alexis (^_~)
