SmackDown's Pretty Sure You Remember It...

It’s the reason you come back 😉

A Good Tuesday to You, Enthusiasts!

So, RAW was hit or miss but not especially dismal so, SmackDown doesn’t have to do too much work but they do have to keep our focus set on the upcoming Money in the Bank PPV.  It appears it plans to do that by announcing its MITB participants.  Then, Becky Lynch will motor over and let Bayley show her that she’s got some moxie.  Probably later on, Kofi Kingston will have words about Kevin Owens' blatant betrayal.  Personally, I didn’t mind it because Kevin Owens is doing what everyone should be doing, defining his character.  We knew he would do something like this and when he did it we were not surprised.  If anything, we laugh a little because Owens is being true to form.

This may be a quality that is lacking amongst a lot of the wrestlers.  As much as the name of the game is “wrestling”, the subplot of that is entertainment.  So, how do We the Audience come to like someone busting their ass out there?  This is why being able to handle the mic is somewhat important.  It provides a sense of who stands before us.  I would say that some of the wrestlers would prefer a more honest set-up, which is they should have gone for Olympic training because their talent is in the skill of the combat art and not selling it to the crowd.  That’s what I feel happens to fellows like that Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano.  They’re great technicians and those types draw fans who recognize the mastery of the art.  I can respect skill but it’s far from how I look at the WWE.

I’m a casual "smark" for the most part, meaning I don’t really care that much.  I’m watching for the excitement and as an outlet for my simmering bloodlust.   I’m one of those who fantasize about busting out a can of whoop ass but when and where in this modern day does one actually do that?  You have to wait to get mugged or something and that’s not something I need.  So, I turn to the WWE to keep me out of jail.  My motivations are simply different.  Yet, these technicians may have to make particular decisions about this genre and way of life.  The WWE will always favor the sensational.  It’s gotta drop your jaw, bring your hands to your head.  Your reaction has to be intense and visceral.  That’s why flashy characters or errant heels tend to do well.  They’re larger than life and very readable.  It’s easy to make up your mind about them and thus get interested in the story/action.

I have to say this is what I noticed about Zelina Vega.  When they were introducing Andrade, Vega came off a lot better to me.  I still don’t read much out of Andrade but Vega barely wrestles and I read her loud and clear.  This sort of thing is hard to teach because it’s tied with one’s nature.  You’re either naturally out-going or you’re not.  It’s not that you can’t find your voice but it will take more work and in a lot of cases, introverts would prefer to pound it out in the gym than sing it to the nosebleeds.  To survive in the WWE, you definitely need to be able to sing it to the nosebleeds to some degree.  Though Brock Lesnar doesn’t say much, he reads to the back of the house.  And that’s what’s going on with Owens for the most part.  Performance!   Skill in the ring must be balanced with a stunning presentation that more or less gives us the tone of the match.  Did the Authority just call this one?  Does someone want a chance at the title?  Did someone talk shit about someone’s man or woman?  All that should be seen in the performance.  These seasonings are what make for a rich and compelling show.  So, believe it or not, the roster can learn a little something from Kevin Owens.   Regardless of the kayfabe, you have a sense of his character and that’s what makes it interesting.  What else is this guy gonna stir up?  We know he’s gonna.  What’s everyone else gonna do?   We’ll see if they think on it.  Funny tweets get retweeted and as for Likes/Favorites, let us wait for that which is deserving.  Don’t want to undermine the message.

See You in a Bit,
