WrestlePalooza I - Matches of Interest
There are some interesting times before us. WrestlePalooza debuts upon the worst backdrop you could ask for. It’s mired in controversy by association and it’s not of its own making. How do you make lemonade out of this? It’s possible but it’s due to circumstances that I’m looking at 2 matches.
The first match is the slated opener, Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena. Now, I never saw them throwdown in their heyday and I’ll keep to my parkour philosophy of always going forward so, I won’t watch any old matches but knowing what the conclusion is, so to speak, I’m interested to see how they incorporate all that they know.
Lesnar is in an uncomfortable spot given his personal reputation is somewhat tarnished. We don’t mind him being big and bad in the ring but that doesn’t translate well to real time living. There’s nothing wrong with him having fun being a terror but it doesn’t wipe his slate clean.
Thankfully, it doesn’t need to. Given everything, I think Cena can just lock in and be the hero. Lesnar shouldn’t give it to him. It should look like he’ll ruin his day but that “Hustle, Loyalty & Respect” should save it. Neither guy needs to come back but you get the feeling that they’ll keep Lesnar on-call for a few more years. For all intents and purposes, Lesnar can take the fall. It’s Cena’s retirement tour, I’m glad to see it have some more high notes.
As for the second match of interest, it’s all about what will probably close in the blockbuster Mixed Tag Team Match with The Visionary Couple, Lady Becky Lynch & Lord Seth Rollins vs. The Couple of the People, AJ Lee & CM Punk. This is interesting to me in the sense that this match could be some lemonade.
The circumstances suck for this show and somehow, all our performers have to go at it like this is something that shouldn’t be missed. Many may miss it just to protest. It’s not silly to view this as a Lose-Lose situation. However, that can equate being at the bottom which means that there’s nothing to lose…the glimmer of hope.
I’m thinking they just go for it in that regard. Just let it all hang out and “burn it down”. Why not? People might not care anyway. Now, this is all in terms of kayfabery. No one has to challenge the parent company or anything like that. Maybe at a later date to mimic this moment in history but for now, I think the WWE should show why it’s “essential”.
This is supposed to be a safe space. It has always been a place where though we know the politics exist, you leave them at the door. It’s about what’s going on in the WWE Universe because this is our general escape. We can vent, relax and be truer versions of ourselves. And as long as we mind the rules, without real consequence. This match should emulate that sentiment. The Vision should give a shit and pull all the strings they can and the Real Power Couple should show why everyone shouts their names. I’m curious to see if they have a similar take.
I won’t be in the least bit surprised if Lee & Punk go down, though. The WWE Universe is stingy with its “happy endings”. As in life, we have to remember that it’s not all puppy dogs and flowers. Some of those puppies grow up to be dogs that eat other ones. There are a lot of those in the WWE Universe. So, if Cena gets the win, be prepared for Lee & Punk to get the “L” but it could be kinda bullshit too. You know, the Referee doesn’t see the 3 count or some shit like that. They can technically win at some point but that won’t be the end result. Expect something like that.
Per usual, everyone else kinda has to demonstrate their own version of that sentiment. Some will get the assignment others won’t. I think a good example of who may nail it is Stephanie Vaquer vs. Iyo Sky. They don’t have a dog in this fight so they can just go out and be awesome. All others have to prove why we’re watching them ‘cause there are plenty of people who would gladly take their place, even with this shitty lead in.
So that’s that. I’ll be checking in around 3pm PDT to see how ESPN does a Kick-off Show, if they have one. I’d think they would but who knows. I’ll be getting the spread together, regardless so, I’ll be a bit distracted but not too much. I’ve managed before, haven’t I?
